CHAPTER TWO

Beatrice was most definitely lying. Huxley watched her plump ass as she left the bathroom doorway, his body hardening the way it always did around her, but her odd behavior cooled his heating blood. She was using her irresistible allure to addle his mind. While his brain often glazed over in the face of her creamy skin and womanly body, he wasn’t buying her art lie. Certainly not her I’m tired of faking it retort. Beatrice orgasming was a revelation. A religious experience.

Beatrice lying to him set him on edge.

He yanked on jeans and a T-shirt, almost grabbed his stage slacks, dress shirt, and cape, but he wasn’t sure where he’d left the cape after his last show, and this morning’s calisthenics had him running late. Better to let Beatrice bring his stuff and meet the installer on time.

One step out of the bedroom, two miniature Marlows smacked into his legs. They squealed and growled, then took off, chasing each other around the living room.

“Got you!” Knox cried with his fist pumped in the air. “You’re it.”

Felix scrunched his face in determination, his red hair flopping in front of his determined eyes. “Not for long.”

Their youngest boy leapt after Knox, nearly careening into the coffee table, falling as he lunged for his older brother. The tips of his fingers grazed Knox’s legs. “You’re it!”

“What did I say about running in the house?” Beatice called from their open kitchen. She pointed her spatula at the boys. “Running savages don’t get pancakes.”

On cue, they froze, then ran to the counter and clambered onto their seats.

Chuckling, Huxley moved behind them and kissed the tops of their heads. Seven years ago, he couldn’t have imagined anyone getting excited for Beatrice’s cooking efforts. Since having Knox and Felix, she’d been determined to cook for their boys, and heart-shaped pancakes had become a favorite. Shockingly, no one had gotten sick from her culinary efforts.

Huxley winked at her. “No eggshells in mine, please.”

She twitched her cute nose and flipped her works of art. “Ha, ha.”

“There aren’t eggs in pancakes,” Knox said. The analytical oldest child.

“Actually, there are.” Beatrice bopped him on the nose with her spatula. “You just can’t see them.”

“Like with the banana in Uncle Axel’s ripping-pants act?” Felix asked.

Huxley froze and looked to Beatrice, whose eyes were wide with worry. At seven and five, the boys hadn’t been permitted to watch their uncle’s salacious acts. Axel performed his stripping magic shows to a later night crowd these days, keeping the early evening acts family friendly. The racy number where he ripped off his pants and produced a banana from his previously empty briefs should not have been witnessed by them.

“When did you see the banana number?” Huxley asked Felix.

“When Mom—”

“Incoming pancakes!” Beatrice pushed a plate of syrup-covered hearts between Felix and Knox, hijacking their attention.

Huxley narrowed his eyes at her. First, she’d lied about why she was stressed and barely sleeping. Now she was dodging the reason why their boys had attended Axel’s stripping show.
